Ubuntu Screensaver – It Works

Ever since I’ve installed Ubuntu (Dapper) when the screensaver kicked in – it completely locked up my computer. I haven’t really messed with it but I posted a comment on Matt Woodward’s blog today (he’s thinking of switching too) and came home and decided to see if I could fix it.

I dug through the Ubuntu forums (great support resource there!) and found a few solutions…

  1. Uninstall the Gnome screensave and reinstall xscreensaver
  2. Check your xorg.conf and make sure the AGP ‘mode’ is set correctly
  3. uninstall the screensaver
  4. apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

#4 turned out to be the winner. I rarely use the screensaver but it’s nice now that it works! So far that was the only thing that hadn’t worked in Ubuntu and now it’s fixed.

Several of the screensavers are OpenGL so I’m assuming something there was locking things up…

Everything works now – I can preview, and set my screensaver. Now back to SameGnome.

  1. I also have had a problem of a blank, unresponsive screen on my laptop from time to time. I found a less ideal solution for the past few months. If you switch to a terminal from x11 (control + alt + f1) and then back to the x11 window system (control + alt + f7) you should get your display back.

Thanks for this, I won’t have to muck around with the terminals anymore.
