Should Google Buy Adobe?

This is one I hadn’t considered before but is mentioned in this article entitled “” - Part II of a series by John Milan.

He wonders what Google will do if the search/advertising revenue drops and one of his suggestions is they might acquire someone - but who?  One of the suggestions is Adobe - Google could get PDF, Flash and the upcoming Apollo and of course ColdFusion!

It’s an interesting direction and one I hadn’t thought of before…

I’ll second the “NO”. Google is good at search engines and web apps. Their existing desktop apps were purchased (earth, picasa, sketchup), not created by Google, and I don’t see a very good development path even on those few apps.

I’ll be third to say No. Without going into specifics, I think it’s a horrible idea

I’m going to argue with a YES. I believe that Google have a firm grasp of usability, and have a great track record that only seems to strengthen as they expand into new areas. My reaction to those who have said no here is that they are probably imagining Google becoming like Adobe, as opposed to the opposite. Adobe have produced some great technologies, but the interfaces are very difficult to understand without training/experimentation, and they have a long way to go for cross-platform compatibility. My company is partnered with Adobe, and we have real problems in both of those areas, and Google have them almost nailed. A great concept in my opinion.

Impossible. Google has taken a ‘free ride’ all this time. How? Linux, mysql, apache, python, etc.. Google hasn’t created any of these. They’ve made some good buys in software but Adobe, they couldn’t manage this one. For starters, Google is focused on being a media company and Adobe would be a distraction. Secondly, Google’s search engine is no longer a technological advantage, I believe the competition has caught up in this area. Have you searched with yahoo lately, or ask.com, or even live.com? Pretty much the same results. Google’s objective: content, content, content
